Male role models in care

Male role models in care

A recent UK census found that men make up just 15.3% of the care sector workforce.

In an increasingly ageing population, care workers are now in even more demand and men can help to fill the gap in providing much needed personal care to the elderly.

We know from our own experience that there are some clients who would prefer a male carer to come out and visit them, but traditionally the media representation of males as carers has been lacking. However, the roles available in care are just as suited to men, providing a rewarding career choice with great flexibility.

At Nurse Plus, we are flexible in our approach to recruits and offer a variety of roles including homecare, domiciliary care and supported living.

We want our clients to feel comfortable talking about difficult subjects to their carer and we believe that recruiting males into the sector will help to bridge the gap in moral support for elderly men.

Rhys Chandler, a senior care coordinator for Nurseplus, started his career as a healthcare assistant at a residential home. Rhys explained that he has always been a very hands-on person and wanted a job where he could be on his feet all day while also giving something back.

“People have this idea in their head that a carer is someone who visits people who are stuck in bed and it’s only providing them with personal care, washing, dressing; it’s not like that!

“As a carer, it’s your job to encourage people to be independent and support themselves. You get to know the people you’re visiting and build up a good working relationship. Most of the people are able to have a laugh and a joke and it is a really fun job.”

If you or someone you know would like to begin a career where you will have the opportunity to make a real difference to someone’s life, then get in touch with your local Nurseplus branch.
