Two Minutes with Martha - Healthcare Assistant

We recently chatted with Martha, one of our Healthcare Assistants, and asked her a few questions about her role at Nurseplus.

Martha talks about what to expect when beginning a care role, her first day on the job and her favourite aspect of working with people within a care setting.

We get some great insights from Martha about what to expect within her job role, so if you are looking to begin a career in care or you're getting prepared for your first day, check out what Martha has to say!

What interested you about care work?

I’ve always enjoyed helping others so doing it as a career was always quite appealing to me and nursing is something I'd quite like to go into when I get older. I thought it was a really good way to start a career and it’s a good pathway for getting into that kind of job.

How did you find the training?

I found the training quite easy to understand, it was a really good introduction into healthcare and just the basics of caring for people in general. I found it really informative and, as I said before, I want to get into nursing, so it’s information that I can then take on further into my career. I can also go on to do apprenticeships and NVQ’s with Nurseplus, that will help build my career.

What were you most worried about? How did it turn out?

I was worried about not knowing what I was doing or perhaps doing it wrong; hurting somebody, but it wasn’t like that at all. You’ve always got somebody to help you if you need help, you can go and ask other staff members for help and they will always be happy to teach you. They will help you learn and grow as an individual.

How was your first day?

My first day was scary. Going into my first care home was nerve wracking because I didn’t know what to expect, however everyone was really welcoming and they were supportive and helped teach me how to care for people in the best way possible.

What’s your favourite part of the role?

My favourite part of the role is helping other people and actually seeing how your help benefits them, how it makes them happier and helps them live their lives the best they can.

What do you think you’ve learnt in your role?

I’ve learnt different ways of communicating with people, such as non-verbal people. Things like putting up two hands and asking them to point to a hand when asking them for tea or coffee. It’s just finding different ways to communicate with people who perhaps can’t communicate like we do.

How flexible do you find your role?

This role is ideal for me as I am in sixth form at the moment, so my availability can change from week to week so it’s perfect for managing my own schedule. I can choose shifts I'm available for and I never have to feel committed to certain days of the week, I can just do the shifts as and when.

How supportive were your branch?

My branch were extremely supportive, if I ever needed to know any information or needed to discuss a shift or ask any questions about the home that I would be working at they were always very good at communicating and answering any questions I had.
