Our CareLineLive Star Carer: Anne-Marie of Nurseplus Southampton
CareLineLive provides us with an easy-to-use home care management system which we use for communications and to organise our care staff. Each month CareLineLive host an award for their Star Carer, and this month Nurseplus carer, Anne-Marie was chosen from hundreds of nominees.
Sian Hurst, Branch Manager of Nurseplus Southamptonsubmitted Anne-Marie for consideration because of her exceptional approach to care and for consistently exceeding expectations in the workplace.
We sat down for a chat with Sian Hurst, so we could find out what made Anne-Marie stand out among other Star Carer nominees, and what it is that Anne-Marie does that really makes a difference in the lives of those she cares for.
“Anne-Marie George has been registered with Nurseplus since July 2015 and has always been one of the most reliable, loyal, and caring carers we have. Anne-Marie always makes a point of going the extra mile for her clients, but we only ever find out about this by chance, as she will not tell the branch team about the extra touches she adds to her daily care work.
For example, we discovered Anne-Marie had been compiling word searches for one of the clients she cares for who is non-verbal (in her own time). She designed word searches that contained all the names of his carers and the coordinators who were familiar to him. Anne-Marie also added a nickname that she had given the client for him to find in the word search, which was ‘cheeky monkey’. We know that the client really enjoys doing these word searches and loved that Anne-Marie’s creation was made specifically for him.Anne-Marie also hand-makes birthday cards for all her regular clients, and each birthday card is designed specifically for them, which we know makes their birthdays even more special.
She will take the time to get to know each of her clients well and we feel she truly cares for each and every one of them. Not only does her attention to detail help personalise the care she gives, but her efforts help keep relatives of her clients up to date with daily news and bulletins if they want.
Thanks to Anne-Marie’s caring nature, she will always be there for her clients. When she found out that another carer, who was covering her shifts whilst Anne-Marie was on annual leave, was sick she cancelled her plans at very short notice. This meant changing plans with a friend because she was adamant her “clients came first”.
Since registering with Nurseplus, Anne-Marie has worked every Christmas and Boxing Day to continue paying visits to her clients and ensure the consistency of her care. Anne-Marie is usually one of the only carers we have who will work full-time over the holidays.
True to Anne-Marie’s nature, she never lets her disability (being deaf) get in the way of the care she delivers. In fact, Anne-Marie overcomes barriers every day to ensure that the care she gives her clients is the best it can be. She is our CareLineLive Star.”
CareLineLive also managed to get a few words from Anne-Marie herself who, as previously stated, does not like to talk much about herself.
This is what she had to say about her award and her work in care.
Anne-Marie, what was your reaction to winning CareLineLive’s January Star Carer Award?
I am very surprised and happy.
What aspects of being a carer do you enjoy most?
Looking after people, having a chat with them, making sure they are safe and well.
How does CareLineLive’s Carer Companion App help in your job?
It’s good. The app is a lot quicker than writing the log books. It’s better now, people can understand each other’s writing in the notes.
What are the challenges in your job?
Driving around all day is tiring. My hearing isn’t good, but I just get on with it. If clients don’t understand, then I repeat things, and if I don’t understand them, then I will ask them to say things again. My clients know me really well as I see the same ones every day and they understand that sometimes I need them to repeat things.
How do you switch off after a hard day at work?
Watch Netflix and walk the dog.
