The Best First Day - Preparing for Your First Agency Shift
Starting any new job can be nerve-wracking, especially when it’s your first shift with a new care agency. At Nurseplus, we understand that stepping into a care environment for the very first time takes confidence, compassion, and preparation. But there's no need to be nervous. We got you.
We wanted to guide you through your first shift, help you feel ready, prepared, supported, and excited to start making a difference in this rewarding career. Here's what you'll need to know.
1. Understand Your Role
Before your shift begins, make sure you clearly understand the expectations. Your local branch team will work with our care partners to ensure your skills match the setting and give you a run-down of what to expect on your first visit. However, you can always ask any questions you might have about:
What your responsibilities might be
What type of care will you be providing (personal care, companionship, medication support)
If there any specific needs for the client (mobility issues, dietary needs, communication preferences)
We will always go through a detailed care plan or assignment details with you. We advise ou to read it carefully and don't hesitate to ask questions beforehand.
2. Dress the Part
You will be representing Nurseplus on your first shift, and we're big on first impressions. When you are working with us, you'll be expected to wear your uniform and uphold our standards of dress as per your employee handbook. You'll also need you consider wearing:
Clean, comfortable clothing
Closed, non-slip shoes
Minimal jewellery and tied-back hair for hygiene and safety
We also suggest you bring a watch with a second hand (which is essential for taking pulses), and consider having a notepad and pen handy so you can take notes on the go.
3. Pack Your Essentials
Like with any job, there are a few items we'd advise you pack for your shifts. Prepare a small kit to bring with you on your first day including:
Your ID badge
The Care plan (if applicable)
Gloves and PPE (many settings will have these readily available, but it's proactive to carry your own)
A bottle of water and some snacks if you have a long shift
Your phone, fully charged (but used only in designated times and areas for privacy reasons)
4. Arrive Early
The saying goes that if you arrive on time, you are late. It's best, when going to a new place for your first care shift, to plan your journey in advance, whether by car, public transport, or on foot. You should aim to arrive 10–15 minutes early, giving you time to settle in, introduce yourself, and review any last-minute updates. Being early shows reliability and gives you a calm start.
5. Be Professional and Compassionate
Care work is deeply personal. Start your shift with:
A warm smile
A respectful introduction
A patient, listening ear
Every client is different — observe, ask questions, and be open to learning. Building trust from the first moment is key.
6. Stay Calm and Ask for Help
It’s completely normal to feel nervous. If you’re unsure about something:
Refer to the care plan
Contact your agency for guidance
Speak to a senior carer or colleague if you're in a facility
It’s better to ask than guess. You're never alone — support is just a phone call away.
7. Reflect and Learn
After your shift, take a few minutes to reflect:
What went well?
What would you do differently next time?
Do you need to follow up on anything with your agency?
This reflection helps you grow more confident with every shift.
Final Thoughts
Your first shift as a care agency worker is a milestone — and we’re here to make sure it’s a positive one. With preparation, professionalism, and a caring attitude, you’ll not only get through your first day — you’ll thrive.
Welcome to the team. You’re about to make a real difference in someone’s life.
